Amsterdam, September 10-11, 2026
Cinema is still built from images that hold still. What happens when they don't?
AI Greenhouse β a two-year research collaboration between the Netherlands Film Academy and AIxDESIGN β invited filmmakers, media practitioners, and creative communities to two connected events exploring critical and experimental approaches to AI in filmmaking practice.
For this third edition, we welcomed Amsterdam-based digital artist Geoffrey Lillemon, whose long-running Oculart platform pioneered the browser as a space for cinematic, real-time, interactive art, for a public lecture and full-day workshop.
Evening Lecture: The Performance of the Algorithm
Geoffrey opened with the Blue Screen of Death as a metaphor for forced interruption and reset, and the loading bar of early net art as an argument for slowness against today's glimpse culture. The talk moved through a chain of 12 real-time artworks β among them Possession of Chess, Symphony of the Tempest, and Beast Jesus β each piece's output feeding the next's input, threading a chess engine, biological sensors, and the Voynich manuscript into work that shifts from cold computation toward something closer to ritual. Leaning on the Frankenstein myth and a grotesque, monstrous aesthetic, he argued for using AI to express a viewpoint you already have, not to hand it your identity.
Full-Day Workshop: Quantum Editing
Held the next day inside Hugging Face's shifting model landscape (with Think Diffusion, Flora AI, ChatGPT, and Luma Labs also on hand), the workshop mapped the tool spectrum from raw GitHub repos to polished commercial platforms, then into vibe-coding custom software with Claude Code. Anchored in the Kuleshov effect, each participant generated an image of a deity, then re-edited it (relighting, angle shift, expression swap) to show how a single edit changes meaning, using a 9-clicker editor built live during the session. Everyone's exports were sequenced into a shared Exquisite Corpse screening, each ending frame flowing into the next person's opening one.
