Seeding Alternative Narratives of AI // AIxD Community Session Research Rendezvous · Luma

We had a plan (expecting 10-ish people) but then waayyy more people (50+) signed up to join us (YAY) so now we’re making a new plan haha. We asked: what’s the best way to hold open conversation in a bigger group?

“WORLD CAFE” FORMAT

After a shared opening (welcome + intros + visual exercise), we’re now opting for a sort of ‘World Cafe’ format where participants rotate across different breakout rooms - where each room dedicated to exploring a different narrative.

They will spend +/- 10 minutes in each space - expanding on the ideas they find there, sharing references, thoughts, notes, links, quotes, people, anything to develop this lens within their own minds, amongst yourselves, and for the next group.

They are invited to move into a new space a total of 3 times (every 10 mins), or free to remain in one for however long they like.

LOOKING FOR CO-FACILITATORS / HOSTS

To help us spark & document meaningful conversations, we’d love to have a host / co-facilitator to hold each space.

Your role would be to hold the space, inviting people and their thoughts, raising questions and fueling the convo when things go quiet, reflecting back on contributions, insights and patterns, help document the conversations and things being shared, and have fun!

In terms of prep, we will brief you over Slack and support with the agenda + some practices and questions to ask. We’ll host using Butter and Miro and make sure the board, rooms, and spaces are all set up so you don’t have to do anything about that.

In terms of time investment, we suggest to meet 15 mins prior to the starting time of the event, the event itself is 1,5 hour, and then wrap with some weeding & sense-making (max 30-60 minutes) on your space on the board within a week of the event - so 2-3 hours total. This is the minimum and of course you’re also free to get more involved. This is a voluntary position which you’re free to share about on socials and add to your portfolio.

It’s pretty low-key - a bit more hands-on than being a participant - but super important for the participants feeling welcomed, for us being able to host all the people that have registered, and an opportunity for you to dive deeper into a topic of choice, practice facilitation skills, and contribute to the community exploration of alternative narratives for AI.
