About 🌾

We're building Grain: a cookbook of critical and creative AI literacy exercises for educators in film and the wider audiovisual & creative field. We're collecting recipes from fellow practitioners, and we'd love yours. 🧑‍🍳

What we're looking for 🍳

Have you run an exercise that gets people thinking critically and making creatively with AI in your teaching or your workshops specifically in the context of film, audiovisual, time-based media, and storytelling?

We're after tried-and-tested group exercises. Hands-on or analog, 15 minutes or a full day, beginner or advanced. The one hard requirement: another educator can read your recipe and run it themselves.

What that might look like:

• 🧪 Hands-on experiments with specific AI tools (image generators, chatbots, code assistants, video models)
• 🤸 Analog activities that reveal computational logic through embodied practice
• 📺 Critical readings, watchings, or listenings with a structured discussion
• 🎭 Provocations, games, or role-plays that get at how AI sees, thinks, or makes
• 🧭 Exercises that help people figure out how they want to relate to AI in their own practice

What makes a good recipe 🥕

A good recipe helps a room of people think together, and trusts the room to be smart if given the right container. Beyond that:

• Emerges from real practice - something you've actually run with people, not just thought up.
• Specific about what participants do, step by step, in a way a stranger could pick up and adapt for their group, time, tools, or context.
• Has at least one designed social moment - a structured interaction where the thinking happens between people, not just in private.
