In an era where AI-generated images are crafted from words rather than real-world references, they often lack the quality of the human experience. Latent Identities explores the gap between how computers see us and how we see ourselves, raising questions about the accuracy and emotional truth of AI representations. Can we overcome the biases and limitations of AI with a more nuanced and compassionate approach? And how can practices from other disciplines help us perceive and describe people more authentically?

A collaboration between The Hmm and AIxDESIGN, and funded by SIDN fund, this project developed an interactive tool that helps people grasp and subvert the unrealistic perfection of AI-generated images. The journey included research and the development of an interactive experience, culminating in its presentation at the "Poetics of Prompting" exhibition at MU Hybrid Art House during Dutch Design Week, from October 4 to November 24, 2024.

The web tool we created was was exhibited as part of the Poetics of Prompting Exhibition by The Hmm at MU Hybrid Art House in Eindhoven.
Prompt Your Person was a successful experiment in critical AI pedagogy, helping thousands of visitors — many new to generative AI — understand the challenges and limitations of generating realistic images of people using generative AI.

Prompt Your Person challenges you to write a prompt that captures the essence of your favourite person. It invites you to go beyond visual descriptions to prompt portraits that convey how and why you love them.
Generative AI often creates stereotypical images of people—depicting leaders as men, hyper-sexualized Asian women, aggressive Blacks, or beauty as smooth skin and symmetrical faces. These tropes are not only damaging but fail to reflect how we see our loved ones. Describing someone in purely physical terms overlooks their aura and the deeper, emotional connection we feel to them—the warmth of their hug, the joy of their laugh.
In Prompt Your Person, a collaborative project by AIxDESIGN and The Hmm, we invite you to explore how combining both visual and emotional prompts can create more meaningful portraits. You will test how AI handles these ****different approaches and see how it biases identity, often favouring specific ‘defaults’.
Together with you, we want to challenge how AI sees people, nurturing the poet inside of each of us: Can AI truly capture a person when we prompt from the heart instead of the eye?
