Mapping AI & Design Field: a collaboration between AIxD & Aalborg University
This project is an in-depth research effort to map the emerging intersection between AI and design. This mapping will allow visualizing various roles designers and creatives play in AI and create an extensive and accessible answer to the questions; “How might we define the AI x Design space and how does the ecosystem look like?”, “What does AI offer to the creative and cultural industries and vice versa?” and “What role do designers play in AI – today and in the future?”. The research is applied in three main streams:
1- Understand: A detailed desk research to understand trends and dynamics of the field.
2- Communicate: A live podcast series in two seasons to discover what does AI propose to Design field and what does Design propose for AI through conversations with professionals from the field.
3- Illustrate: A participatory community network mapping research to produce an illustrated depiction of the ecosystem, outlining overlaps, opportunities, challenges, key players and organizations, tools, and subjects.
This community-sourced map is the outcome of the Illustration stream and an early version of the ongoing mapping process.
