In September we are kicking off an AI x Music project; a research initiative between AIxDESIGN and the International Music Industry Lab (imi-lab).

This project aims to explore the intersection of generative AI and the music industry, focusing on mapping the current ecosystem and developing equitable models for AI's role in music creation.

The first phase involves ecosystem mapping: creating a detailed map of the generative AI landscape in the Dutch music industry. This will include identifying key players, understanding their activities, and capturing insights through participatory workshops. The result will be a comprehensive ecosystem map, serving as a resource for collaboration and further research.

<aside> 👉🏽 The AI x Music Ecosystem Mapping Phase aims to chart the landscape of generative AI in relation to the music industry and innovation in The Netherlands.

The primary purpose of this phase is to identify and document key players and their activities, creating a detailed ecosystem map.

This map will serve as a foundational resource, facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders. The project will produce a visual network / node graphic complemented by a detailed and open-source database (/ spreadsheet), enabling continuous updates and contributions from the community.

Additionally, the project seeks to uncover the pressing questions and needs within this domain through participatory workshops, helping to highlight gaps and priorities for future research. These findings will be consolidated into a mini-report or an interactive digital garden, providing evidence to support future grant applications and guiding strategic initiatives.

02_About this Role

We’re looking for a (junior - mid) researcher to support us throughout the first phase of the project.

You will be provided a research plan upon onboarding and lead on executing it. You’ll be supported by project lead and AIxDESIGN founder Nadia Piet and the rest of the AIxDESIGN team, having (bi-)weekly check-ins to discuss feedback, and align on next steps.

Below, we detail the role of the researcher across the research activities and outputs.

1. Build an interactive network / stakeholder map of AI x Music ecosystem in NL including key take-holders, their activities, and questions You will be responsible for:

   • Data collection
   • Data cleaning
   • Writing instructions + document approach for continued community upkeep
   • Could be done in Miro, Kumu, or other tool (TBD)

   And support on:

   • Information design

2. Prep + post-process participatory research sessions. You will be responsible for:

   • Documentation of workshop exercises
   • Prepare virtual boards in Miro/Figjam for participatory sessions (bonus if you make it cute)
   • Note-taking during session (together with AI transcriber)
   • Post-processing and drawing out insights, themes, quotes

3. Synthesize project insights You will be responsible for:

   • Creating project documentation based on provided templates

   And support on:

   • Creating small insights report (research, synthesis, writing, design)
