<STORY&CODE> is a cross-over artist residency, research project, and public event program exploring the role of AI in animation specifically, and filmmaking and storytelling more broadly.

This isn’t just about generating images, but also about algorithmic editing, sound design, co-writing dialogues with GPT text models, character development, object recognition in post-processing, creative coding for editing, and many other ways in which it might show up.

Within the program, we’re pairing 6 Filmmakers & 6 Creative Technologists to work together on story and develop a teaser / trailer while experimenting in the creative process with AI/ML techniques along the way.

If you’re a Filmmaker who's curious about AI’s role in filmmaking and animation, we invite you to join us and get up close and personal with algorithmic tools and thinking.

If you’re a creative technologist interested in film and storytelling, we invite you to join us to work alongside a storyteller in playing with and reflecting on creative AI.

Expand your filmmaking practice with AI & ML across 4 curated modules

All pairs will work towards an animated teaser or trailer of their story concept. The program is split up in 4 modules, each covering a different step in the development process of a trailer. From writing to storyboarding, and from animation to sound design, we’re aiming to cover all essential steps in developing a great teaser or trailer with the assistance of AI.

The primary goal of the program is to learn, to experiment, and share our results & learnings along the way. Taking a research-by-making approach, we are creating this space to experiment, facilitate a creative and critical exploration of AI, explore computationally-augmented creativity within the filmmaking world, while being present with the process and our experiences.

Parts of the program will be hosted as public events including behind-the-screens artist talks by creatives who have pushed the bounds on AI in film, and hands-on beginner-friendly workshops for storytellers to begin tinkering with low- and no-code tools.

Timelines - experimentation first, producing second

The program will run from March - August 2023 hosting artist talks, hands-on workshops, play and experimentation time, plus offering tech support, feedback sessions, and group check-ins along the way.

In the first phase of the program, we will gather ideas, expose ourselves to inspiration, and experiment tons! This part includes four modules, each focused on a different part of the creative process and each documented through a co-created and reflective log.
